Thomas McMillen-Oakley

Thomas McMillen-Oakley's art blog

I am an artist, a Professor, a Dad and Husband living in Jackson, Michigan. I grew up in Toledo, Ohio and attended the University of Toledo and the School of Design at the Toledo Museum of Art for my degree in Art Education. Upon graduating, I began teaching art at Columbia Central High School in Brooklyn, MI and in 2000; I began teaching at Jackson Community College as the Lead Faculty for the Studio Art Department. In 2004 I was named the Michigan Art Education Association’s Higher Education Art Teacher of the year.

I am a working artist and consider my primary craft the ability to teach art and make it relevant to my students. My artwork spans the dimensions from 2D to 3D with emphasis in pottery and ceramic sculpture as well as photography and manipulated digital images. My work has been shown all over the state and has been honored by the Jackson Civic Art Association and the Michigan Education Association.

I am a former board member of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Jackson County and a Collaborator for the Gallery Project in Ann Arbor. I am currently represented by Arts & Ideas Gallery in Plymouth, MI as well as Windsor Cottage in Grand Rapids, MI.
